On Saturday, 30 August 2025, a large group of members and friends of Durbanville Heritage Society met at the Aurora Methodist Church Hall and were fortunate to listen to Mr Bruce Esau, horticulturist and conservationist at Avondale Gardens, share his work on the conservation of Renosterveld in the Durbanville area.
In his enthusiastic and inspirational manner, Mr Esau enlightened the audience on the valuable heritage of endemic Renosterveld and Fynbos in Durbanville and the work and vision of the Friends of Durbanville Parks groups. The photographs on the slides he slowed proved the richness of the flora of the region and why the ‘No Mowing’ signs that are put up this time of the year, are so important.
After the talk and some refreshments, the group went on a walk to Bowlers Public Open Space, guided by Mr Esau, during which he pointed out the unique and wonderful harmony in the rich floral kingdom of this area and how each plant plays a valuable role in the ecosystem.
