Marius Breytenbach talk at Meerendal

Wednesday evening 26 March 2025, at Meerendal farm tasting room, Marius Breytenbach shared his interesting research on the significance of the early farmhouses and werfs in the Tygerberg to DHS members and guests. According to his research, these early farmhouses represent a cultural transition preceding the construction of the gabled Cape Dutch farmhouse style. Many of the current buildings were constructed over the original simple mudbrick rectangular homes. The talk was illustrated with early photographs and drawings of the original homes.

Attendees were fascinated by the information shared by Mr Breytenbach, which was followed by questions and answers as well as thought-provoking contributions from the floor.  After the talk refreshments were served and guests were treated to the excellent Meerendal wines.

Durbanville Heritage Society is grateful towards Mr Breytenbach for his willingness to share his research. The hospitality of hosts Herman and Aletta Coertze, owners of Meerendal, is highly appreciated.
