The Durbanville Heritage Society committee took the initiative to replace the commemorative plaques for the plinths at Pampoenkraal Heritage Square with information on the history of the plain and the old drinking trough in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. These plaques were unveiled during a ceremony on Saturday, 31 May 2025. The wording on the plaques provides a brief background of the history of the plain, as well as the drinking trough. Alderman Theresa Uys, Willem Myburgh and Unati Matiwane from the City of Cape Town, attended the occasion together with members and friends of the society.
The event started with coffee/tea and something sweet, courtesy of Rust-en-Vrede and 45 Squares. After a welcome and short information session by Ms Yolande Snyders, guests could join for a roundabout of the gallery and clay museum. After this, the group made their way to the plain for the unveiling ceremony.
At the plain, deputy chair of Durbanville Heritage Society, Dr Georina Westraadt, briefed attendees on the background to this project and shared the historical significance of the plain. After this, Ms Denise Robinson, founder member of the society, gave a short speech and unveiled the plaques.
After the ceremony, attendees embarked on the Durbanville Wine Safari bus for a tour of two Durbanville vineyards and some wine tasting.
